Saphira: This is Project Meraki.

Saphira: Good  I’m Saphira, I’m your host and I’m from Electus Films. 

Saphira: So what is Electus Films? 

Electus Films is a multimedia video production company designed to celebrate the human form - movement - and capture the essence of living through films, music, and stills that tell real human stories. We have been experts in our industry for more than 6 years now. By gathering together, we will inspire each other to move better, think deeper, and connect more fully to each other and the world. We are based in Singapore and in Perth, Western Australia, but we work with clients worldwide.

Saphira: You must be wondering what does Meraki means? Meraki means; to do something creative with soul, or love. To put a piece of yourself in your work. On this Debut Season of our podcast, I’ve gathered my mentors, friends, and experts in their field of work to share with us their superhuman secrets. That could be their habits, mindset, daily rituals and mantra to help them stay focused on their work. And what elements from themselves that they have added to their work that made them these unique individuals today.

Whether you’re a fan of success stories, humble beginnings, an aspiring artist, athlete, pursuer of potential or just need some background noise. Some of these people have taught me things that I’ve lived by to this day. And many give me hope, starting from nothing and succeeding in areas that I too hope to one day.

The beauty of this Podcast is that I’ll be talking to people that feel much closer to me and you. They’ve made what many of us might seem as unobtainable goals and lifestyles, a reality.

This is not an episode on the movement itself. But this is about you.

Why TRUST in your own movement?

A bit of who I am... I do Film and coach Parkour for a living. But currently, I’m recovering from an ACL Reconstruction surgery.

A thought that comes to my mind... A year ago, I conducted a Parkour class where I asked practitioners to move around the obstacles with their eyes closed. The objective is to feel and embrace uncertainty in our surroundings. And it is to remind them to keep moving forward no matter how scary the feeling of uncertainty is.

Movement is different for everyone. Often we stand in front of an obstacle thinking that we are not able to break the jump or feeling that your body isn’t ready for it. In another context, we feel afraid to jump into an endeavor we all longed to do. But how often do we think that it’s probably just our thoughts clouding and doubting our capabilities? But that’s exactly what happened in many instances.

Do take note, there’s a vast difference between KNOWING that you are ready for the endeavor and THINKING that you are ready for the endeavor.

Many people have mistaken that.

So first, in order to move on from that. We have to trust.

Trust YOUR TRAINING.

Whatever training, rituals or practices it could be. Could be the course you’re taking in University, that workshop you attend, a mentor that’s guiding you through exercises. When you go for training, everyone has a different objective. Some may be seeking pleasure from the companies they get, some are seeking to learn something new or gain a new perspective, and some even just seeking to be healthy in whatever aspects of their lives. You may never really know what you get at the end of the session, but does that stop you from doing it? No. You still go for it and at the end of the day, you know there’s still something you can bring out from that training. Regardless as to whether or not you obtained your objective. Remember, not everyone can learn how to fly on their first attempt. Some will fall down and crawl for awhile before they are able to start walking again. It’s okay if you can’t get a movement, it’s okay if you can’t understand a topic, or you can’t seem to pick up a skill no matter how small it is. It’s okay. You have to let your guard down, stop trying to compare yourself to anyone. Get better than yourself, not anyone else. Trust that every training it’s a step closer to achieving your desired goals.

Even if it’s just a 5 minutes of training a day, you keep moving. You keep doing.

Consistency is Key.

Trust YOUR BODY.

What has your body got to do with it at all? Listen to your body. Do it. Don’t worry, you can thank me later. Your body will always let you know whenever you’re still capable of pushing through your limits, or if that’s really enough for one day. Yes, mentality does play a part. It’s all about the mind. But it’s also about the body too. There was once I went through my regular training, always trying to push. Mind over matter, I whispered to myself. I felt that my body was about to give away, I was so drained out but I told myself, just one more and that was it. I got injured really badly.

People would say about my injury, ‘Common sense, you stop when you’re tired!’  But 90% of the time, even those same people will forget to do so themselves.

That’s when major injuries happen. Your body will let you know if it’s time for you to rest for the day.

Hands trembling? Trying to catch a breath? Knees feel like they’re gonna give way? Pay attention. Don’t rush. Take your time, give it time. Quality over quantity. Make sure you are in good and healthy condition before pursuing anything. Feel sick? Stay home and recover. Feel sleepy, make sure you’re getting enough sleep. It’s a butterfly effect really. The butterfly effect is a concept that states that "small causes can have larger effects”.

Remember.

Train for a lifetime, not for a year.

Trust YOURSELF.

Ultimately, this is the most important thing you should do, not only in movement but also in your life. When you look at an obstacle for the first time, before even pursuing it, you’ll have the notion that you’re capable of getting it, where does that come from? Because when you trust your training, and you trust your body, you begin to trust yourself that you can make this leap. Doubts are mental blocks telling you-you're not ready. You can overcome these through a change in attitude, belief, or physical strength and repetition of a motion. By working through these you can work towards ridding yourself of these doubts. This can be applied in all areas of life.

Life is full of uncertainty, people may envision how they want certain things to turn out, but honestly, have any of the things you thought through turned out to be exactly as you planned? But are you going to let that doubt yourself and your capabilities of envisioning things? Of course not right? I mean seriously. You still strive through things, you don’t give up on it just because it didn’t turn out to be how you wanted it to be or everything is just so hard. Trust yourself that you can do it soon, you just need more training. Work on it. Fight your fears and doubts about everything. Fear things won’t work out the way you want it to be? Stop expecting. Same thing in everything you do. You love something, go for it. Embrace it. Be it in movement, career, family, and relationships with anyone.

If you really love something, trust yourself that you can deal with it no matter how hard and a challenge it is.

When everything seems like it’s going nowhere, everything is reaching a plateau.. Take a step back, breathe and look at the bigger picture. There are many reasons that you may think about why you feel like giving up on the things you’re pursuing, but have you ever thought about the one reason that’s driven you this far? Change is happening every day. Change in the way we move, the way we think, the way we approach things, the way we feel. So what kind of change do you want it to be?

I trust that all the answers are within you.
